The Golden Buddha, officially known as Phra Phuttha Maha Suwanna Patimakon, is one of Thailand’s most significant national treasures. Located in the temple of Wat Traimit at the edge of Bangkok’s Chinatown (Yaowarat), it is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest solid gold statue.
· Weight: Approximately 5.5 tonnes (5,500 kg).
· Dimensions: Nearly 3 meters (9.8 ft) tall and about 3.1 meters wide at the lap.
· Gold Content: The statue is made of approximately 18-karat gold (roughly 80% purity). The gold alone is valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
· Art Style: Classic Sukhothai style (13th–14th century), characterized by an egg-shaped head, elongated ears, and a serene, flame-like finial on the top of the head.
The most famous aspect of the Golden Buddha is that its true nature was a secret for over 200 years.
- The Disguise: To protect the valuable gold from invading Burmese armies (likely during the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767), the statue was completely encased in plaster and colored glass. It appeared to be a common, relatively low-value stucco image.
- The Move (1955): In 1955, while the “plaster” statue was being moved to a new building at Wat Traimit, a cable on the crane snapped. The statue fell and cracked.
- The Reveal: When the workers inspected the damage, they saw a bright yellow metallic glint through the cracks. Upon stripping the plaster, the solid gold masterpiece was revealed. Pieces of the original plaster are still on display in the temple museum today.
